The READ Philippines - Book Club

Featuring America is in the Heart: A Personal History, by Carlos Bulosan

Do you look back upon your school days wishing that you learned more about writers to whom you could relate? Were your literature classes filled with a lot of Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and Melville, but not enough Rizal, Bulosan or Hagedorn? If so, then READ Philippines invites you to participate in a revival of the READ Philippines Book Club!

Join us as we embark on an exploration of Filipino and Filipino-American literary greats, past and present. The writers we explore will fill the void left empty by the Anglo-centric literary tradition in which we were raised.

Every 1-2 months, the Book Club will focus on a book by a Filipino or Filipino-American author. Together with READ Philippines Director John Entrada and Co-lead Mark Bhasin, participants will be given several weeks to read a chosen book, after which a Literary Discussion will take place over a weekend brunch or afternoon tea. At the end of each discussion, participants will have the opportunity to suggest and vote on the next book.

To kick things off, we will begin by reading America is in the Heart: A Personal History, by Carlos Bulosan. A narrative that begins in the 1920s, America is in the Heart is one of the earliest written accounts of the Filipino-American immigrant experience.  It is a quick read, and a great introduction to Filipino-American literature.

The Literary Discussion will take place on Sunday, July 26th, at 3pm, following the Asian American Film Festival screening of Manilatown is in the Heart. Details to follow. To receive updates from the book club, CORE members are encouraged to contact John Entrada, Director of READ Philippines (read@core-nyc.org)

From www.bn.com:

America Is in the Heart, A Personal History, by Carlos Bulosan. This autobiography of the Filipino poet describes his boyhood in the Philippines, his voyage to America, and his years of hardship and despair as an itinerant laborer following the harvest trail in the rural West. Bulosan does not spare the reader any of the horrors that accompanied the migrant's life; but his quiet, stoic voice is the most convincing witness to the terrible events he witnessed.
